In Our Lifetime
a textile by and for Tasmanians

involved embroiderers from all over Tasmania to create an embroidered textile depicting 58 significant events remembered by Tasmanians, and the production of a website recording the stories and memories behind, or prompted by, the images.

Some of the oldest Tasmanians, many now in residential care, suggested the memories for this work. The images, drawn by Elizabeth Barsham, are based on photographs from the Mercury Newspaper, State Archives and personal collections. These images were embroidered by groups throughout Tasmania, including members of the Tasmanian Embroiderers’ Guild, the Country Women’s Association, Eastern Shore Embroiderers and Senior Momentum.

Memories associated with these images are being recorded and placed by Tasmanians of every age on this website.

You are invited to share your memories of life in Tasmania, whether you grew up here or have come here to live.

So far, this heritage textile has been displayed at:

  • Kingston Library and Online Access Centre
